About

About Sqwá First Nation (Skwah)

Sqwá (Skwah) First Nation is a Stó:lō community whose main reserve sits next to downtown Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Sqwá First Nation, also known as Skwah, is a band government of the Stó:lō people in the Chilliwack area of British Columbia. The Nation's language is Halq'eméylem. Sqwá is a separate community from the nearby Skway First Nation (Shxwhá:y Village).

The Nation manages seven reserves, some of them shared with other bands. Skwah Indian Reserve No. 4 is just west of downtown Chilliwack. One of the shared reserves, Pekw'Xe:yles, is the site of the former St. Mary's Indian Residential School. Today it is a cultural, government and business centre. Sqwá runs its reserve lands under its own land code.

The band office provides services in housing, land use, education, preschool and bylaws. Twice a month, the community holds lunches, including Sqwa Elders lunches and All Nations lunches. These bring Elders together to share a meal, visit and reconnect.
